Undergraduates

IEEE Field of Interest

In addition to the traditional fields of Eta Kappa Nu, we also accept students under the IEEE Fields of Interest such that their emphasis or work is related to electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science.

The designated fields are: Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, and Law and Policy.

Point System

Every semester, initiates will have a different set of requirements that they need to meet that will earn them points towards their initiation.

Some items are required regardless of how many points have been earned, so be sure to pay attention to those items as they may offer extra points.

  • • Completed at least three-eighths of the degree requirements [47 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper fifth of their class.

    • Completed one-half of the degree requirements [63 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper quarter of their class.

    • Completed three-fourths of their degree requirements [94 units] and have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper third of their class.

  • • Completed at least three-eighths of the degree requirements [46 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper fifth of their class.

    • Completed one-half of the degree requirements [61 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper quarter of their class.

    • Completed three-fourths of their degree requirements [92 units] and have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper third of their class.

  • • Completed at least three-eighths of the degree requirements [45 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper fifth of their class.

    • Completed one-half of the degree requirements [60 units] and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper quarter of their class.

    • Completed three-fourths of their degree requirements [90 units] and have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper third of their class.

Static Requirements

Every semester, each student member will need to:

  • Pay the induction fee for lifetime membership to IEEE-HKN*

  • Send in your resume

  • Complete the information form

  • Join Eta Kappa Nu in Matasync

  • Attend an Officer’s Office Hour

  • Attend the induction ceremony

  • Sign the book/signature form

Fall 22 Dynamic Requirements

This semester we’re asking that students:

  • Attend two different Officer’s Office Hours

  • Attend an academic/professional development event of your choice

  • Attend a social event of your choice

You can attend other club events to satisfy some of these requirements. We will need proof of attendance and confirmation from an officer of the organization for the event you attended.

*Membership to IEEE-HKN is for life, you will never be asked to pay for membership again. Membership to IEEE after your induction is not required for membership, but they will ask you to renew that membership. That is optional and up to you!

Graduates

As a graduate student, this could mean that your project or thesis work can be related to these fields even if your major is not.

The designated fields are: Engineering, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, and Law and Policy.

If you’re interested, always ask!

  • • Endorsement by Dr. Ashley Geng of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department wherein this student conducts the majority of their studies.

  • • Endorsement by Dr. Adam Kaplan of the Computer Science department wherein this student conducts the majority of their studies.
